The Socrative App

Today I dug into Socrative.com and the Socrative App, pronounced so-cra-tive with an emphasis on the "so".   It's been batted around on Twitter and other digital sites as a cool tool so what choice did I have?  I had to know!  What I discovered is that it is a super easy way to replace interactive clickers.  Once you create an account, you login at t.socrative.com and students have the app on whatever device they have whether it is a smartphone, iPod touch, or iPad.  If no device is available they can login using a computer at m.socrative.com.

With an assigned room number shared with the students quizzes are taken and immediate feedback is given to students and teachers.  Teachers can set the quiz to go at the student pace- my preferred method- or they can control the pace of the questions.

Teachers also have the opportunity to stop reinforcers like "Good job! You got the answer right", or just leave them on which is the default setting.  Socrative will give live results in the form of a graph that the teachers sees on his or her end.  Results are either emailed, downloaded into a spreadsheet, or stored in the teacher's online account.  I am struggling to find a downside to Socrative, especially when a bag of clickers costs a bundle!

  1. It says that the activity is limited to 50 users. If we have nearly 150 students, do we create a new activity for each class? I just don't see it working with all five of my sections yet. I signed up for Socrative and will look into it more!

    1. Yes, I am replying to myself because I figured it out. You simply click "Clear Room" to remove the other class information and the new class can join.

  2. Thinking that I may enjoy this app since the Clickers were not my 'friend' at the start of the year. Thanks for providing this information. Also - so many of my students have the tools to use this!

  3. It sounds like Socrative makes sense financially!

  4. This will be so helpful for teachers on getting effective feedback as well as cut down on grading time!

  5. On the teacher end, socrative seems to be easier/faster to use (to input and to retrieve information) than the clicker software, which is important to me!

  6. What a teacher-friendly way to quickly check for student understanding, and to keep data/progress. I like the less grading aspect...this app helps with the whole work smarter, not harder aspect.

  7. I think this would work much better in my classroom than the clickers. I can see some use for it for vocab, for example. Many tests that I give require graphics such as music rhythms, so I think the use my be fairly limited.

  9. We were able to use this app today and it seems pretty cool! I know that my students would love any excuse to use the Ipod Touches that our district has available. I am even thinking that we could take some of our weekly tests and put them into this system. That way, students could take these online or on the Ipod Touches and I could get immediate feedback. If you've got the technology tools -- try this out! You're students will love it!

  11. I think the 50 users is per quiz, per time. I wonder if you tried it and gave the quiz at different times. I think it will work that way.

  13. This is a really neat program! I think that this would be very easy for all people to use, and its much more user friendly than clickers. It also is neat for teachers to see the results and then it gives us the proper information to change our instuction if needed.

  14. This would be a great tool for the teacher as well as the student to get instant feedback on student learning. It would lessen stacks of papers and hours spent checking them.

  16. If I could input images into the quizzes it would be great to use in the music classroom! Might have to stick with google forms. :/

  17. I think this is an awesome and fun way for exit slips and to know whether or not students got the information. It can give the teacher an idea whether or not they need to go back and re-teach.

  18. It looks like a great tool to use in the classroom. Could you start a quiz right after school and keep it going until the next morning so students could take it whenever they wanted as long as it was completed by the next morning? -Bryce Brunswig

  24. This looks great, however, I am at an elementary school without daily access to any of the devices you can use for Socrative. I have the clickers and have just figured out how to use them. If I can work around the device issues, I think I would like Socrative better.

  25. I noticed none of us asked the hard question yet. How do we import eInstruction CPS questions into Socrative quiz? Better yet, how do we reuse or retool Active Engage sessions for it?

  26. can you import a PowerPoint into Socrative?
